Getting A Personal Service With Family Law Firms

I don't think you would disagree if I stated that most people consider lawyers to be rich. They also consider them to be greedy leeches but that's another story. Well, I am here to contradict this belief. Yes, there are many very wealthy lawyers on the planet but there are also many who earn no more than an average wage. The reason for this is usually down to what type of work the lawyer undertakes, where the lawyer works, and whom the lawyer works for. I have a little knowledge of this because my father was a lawyer before he retired and during his career had undertaken various type of legal business. In the early days, he was in partnership with his own business and used to deal mainly in conveyancing work. Later on, he joined one of the many family law firms around at the time dealing with criminal law on the defense side. Still later, he began to work for the government on the prosecution side of the business.

I was not born in the earlier days of my dad's career but I do remember him working for the family law firm when I was young. My dad worked very hard and very long hours but I could certainly not say he was rich. He used to bring home a trolley full of paperwork most nights full of cases, which had to be reviewed for the next day. The family he worked for were very nice people, certainly not you average stereotypical lawyers, but the were only small business and he was not particularly well paid for his efforts. He stayed there for years until the company went bankrupt, which is when he switched to prosecuting.

This was better pay than previously but you have to understand that working for the government. This meant he was dealing with public cases where people couldn't afford defense or prosecution lawyers and one was appointed to them. She the salary here was nowhere near the calibre of that you would expect from a high-priced private lawyer. My dad stayed here until he retired a few years ago but I don't think he ever really enjoyed it. When he was working for the family law firm he used to come home and tell me about his more interesting cases (he could only tell me certain things obviously). He would always have a smile on his face and you could tell that he was happy in his job.

This changed when he began working for the government. He was very stressed; he began to age far more quickly, and was not really the same person anymore. He still worked similar hours but the pressure was far greater than before, and the job satisfaction was no longer there. You see, in family law firms you are offering a personal service which jsut can't be provided elsewhere.

So, if perhaps you ever wondered why a lawyer might choose to work for family law firms at low pay, instead of a corporate company at on a large salary. You needn't be so surprised that it isn't just about the money.
