Just What Does A Maritime Lawyer Do?

Most of us give very little thought, if any to maritime lawyers but in actual fact they play an important role in societies around the whole world. It may seem strange then, that even for those of us who live by or near an ocean port, that maritime lawyers do not generally arise into the everyday consciousness.

The fact is, that when we think of lawyers, the type of job that springs to mind is a personal injury lawyer, the criminal or real-estate specialists. Or we may think of entertainment lawyers. Those who successfully arrange huge settlements for their celebrity clients by suing the National Enquirer for libel are a prime example of this. There are so many specialists in the field of lawyers and generally we have a reasonable idea of what each one does. We've all heard of malpractice attorneys, corporate attorneys, probate attorneys, and even tax attorneys, as they are all common and needed by many of us everyday. And what about the classic defense attorneys who are paid to defend people accused of crimes, (often it seems, whether they're innocent or not). But of course, everyone is entitled to legal representation and the world would be a sad place if this were not the case.

So, back to maritime lawyers. What are they and what is it exactly that they do? Well, lets suppose for a minute that you fancied yourself as an explorer. Perhaps you decide to search for sunken ships, hoping to find lost treasures. If this were the case then you would need to contact maritime lawyers somewhere along the line because all ocean waters have maritime laws that must be upheld and because laws vary depending on where your sunken ship may be, you would have to comply with appropriate laws for that area. Or, if you were beyond any country's jurisdiction then international maritime laws would apply, and you would need to deal with a maritime lawyer who could direct you as to how these laws apply to you.

Of course it's not all about sunken treasure. What if you were planning to work your way across the world on large sea-going vessel? All of the regulations pertaining to your ship from details such as its dimensions, weight and even the packaging of its cargo. Not to mention where it sails, what routes you are planning to take, and how many passengers you wanted onboard, the amount of crew should and even how long you can stay in any given port. You see, all these details and are influenced by maritime law, and without the use of maritime lawyers you could find yourself in a whole heap of trouble.

You may be thinking about starting your own international shipping company. Guess what? You'll need to consult maritime lawyers. Just like business on land, there are taxes that have to be paid, payrolls to sort out, workers to house and feed, supplies to purchase, and many other protocols that must be followed when you are out at sea and also when coming into port. Maritime lawyers are experts in all matters relating to this type of information.

Just imagine for a minute, what additional trouble the owners of the infamous Exxon Valez might have encountered if they hadn't had maritime lawyers to consult about the enormous oil spill from their tanker all those years ago. This one spill managed to cause a horrendous amount of ecological damage, and Exxon had to pay a huge settlement to the people of Alaska in order help try and bring the environment back to its former glory. Maritime lawyers made it their business to research all the pertinent laws and used this to arrange the settlement. Believe it or not these are only a few examples of areas where maritime lawyers can play a vital role in society. Furthermore, you can be sure that as globalisation continues to grow, and more goods and people are travelling the globe for both business and pleasure purposes, maritime lawyers will play an even more important role as this new age in commerce evolves and develops.
